July 2026 Niagara Storms: What They Did to Roofs and What to Check Now
Early July 2026 gave Niagara two of its roughest weather days of the year so far, back to back. If your home is in Thorold, St. Catharines, or anywhere along the path of these storms, this post covers what actually happened, with sourced numbers, and what is worth checking on your roof before small damage becomes a leak.
What happened
July 1: a 95 km/h gust, the strongest wind of the year. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s St. Catharines A weather station recorded a peak gust of 95 km/h on Canada Day (ECCC daily climate data). For context, most asphalt shingle products carry wind ratings that begin to be tested in exactly this range, and shingles near the end of their service life can fail well below it.
July 4: the Thorold storm. In the early morning hours, a fast, localized storm cell brought what the City of Thorold described as sheets of rain, hail, extreme lightning, and high winds. It uprooted large trees, downed power lines, closed roads east of Ormond Street, and left more than 2,500 homes without power at its peak (City of Thorold). Hydro One was still restoring roughly 500 customers the following afternoon.
One detail worth understanding: on July 4 the St. Catharines A station measured a gust of only 33 km/h. The storm that tore through Thorold was compact and intense enough to cause serious damage while barely registering a few kilometres away. That is typical of summer storm cells in Niagara, and it is why “my neighbourhood looked fine” is not a reliable signal about your own roof.
Why hail and wind damage hides
Wind and hail damage rarely announces itself. The failures that turn into leaks months later usually look like this:
- Creased or lifted shingles. A gust lifts the shingle, breaks the sealant bond, and lays it back down. From the ground it looks fine. The next storm peels it off.
- Hail bruising. Hail knocks the granules loose and bruises the mat underneath. The bare spot weathers fast, and the crack shows up a season or two later.
- Damaged vents, flashing, and eavestroughs. Soft aluminum takes hail dents that are easy to spot up close and easy to miss from the street. Dented vents and bent flashing are also the clearest evidence for an insurance claim.
What to check after the July storms
You can do the first pass from the ground with binoculars:
- Look along ridges, rakes, and eaves for shingles that sit unevenly, are creased, or are missing tabs. Wind pressure concentrates at these edges.
- Check the ground and eavestroughs for granules. A sudden dump of granules after a storm points to hail or wind scouring.
- Look at soft metal: eavestroughs, downspouts, window cladding, and roof vents. Hail dents here usually mean the shingles took hits too.
- In the attic, look for daylight, damp insulation, or water staining after the next heavy rain.
If a tree or large branch contacted the roof, get it inspected regardless of how it looks. Impact damage to the deck can be invisible from above.
Insurance timing matters
Most home insurance policies in Ontario require damage to be reported within a reasonable time of the event, and claims are far easier when the damage is tied to a documented storm. The July 1 gust and the July 4 Thorold storm are both on the public record, which is exactly what an adjuster wants to see.
